I recently stumbled across the band Calexico and their 1998 album "The Black Light." It's hard to describe; mostly instrumental tex-mex sound sometimes called "desert noir". The band is centered around guitarist/vocalist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino who reside in Tucscon, Arizona. "The Black Light" is a concept album of a roadtrip crossing into the desert of Arizona and Northern Mexico. The songs act as a soundscape of the journey conveying the vast panorama and stories along the way.

Their third album, Hot Rail is also excellent.
Note: I am hoping at some point Amazon replaces their Flash-based MP3 Clip player with something HTML5 based so you'll actually be able to play music on a mobile.
